With a good DeWalt mitre saw, is this possible?

Frederick, MD(Zone 6a)

We're acting as GC on our new home. Doing as much of the detail work as possible. DH is very good with the DeWalt adjustable. The staircase we want to do (not the balustrades) would be ridiculously expensive to have the boxing in of the work underneath the stairs done. The pic is from a magazine back in 2003; we've saved all our ideas and are getting ready for the details, so does this layered molding look incredibally impossible? The staircase itself will come in stock pieces and is reasonable.

Thanks for any comments. Dea
