Do hyacinths have a place in a shade garden?

Bettendorf, IA

I got started so late in spring so I am trying to plan my fall bulb planting now. I'd love some hyacinth - will they grow in a shade garden?

I've grown them in partial shade here in western NC and also in VA, and they've done fine. Greatest scent in the world!

If your shade is from deciduous trees they'll be perfectly happy. Mine get enough sun to recharge the bulbs before the trees have leafed out.
Same with daffs and tulips.

Thanks! I always forget that deciduous tree thing - mine are so HOORAY!!! Have to plant them close to the patio so I can smell them :)

oooOOOOH, Thanks for posting, Now I know where I'm planting mine. Have to dig them up from a spot that isn't working out with space available. I also forgot about the trees an no leaves thing. I didn't plan that other place very well any way.

spartacusbaby, howdy neighbor. Do your hyacinths come back each year nice and full? I have always found them to dwindle in size over 2 or 3 years and then disappear altogether.
