Clematis doing well

Westmoreland, TN(Zone 7a)

This clematis is doing so well this year it has taken off for me and is tempting to leave the bed.
I hope it will it has a bed of rock to ramble over,...I have a bed of white rock beside it in the hopes of having a clematis ground cover in that spot.
Never tried this before so i don't know if it will work,... but nothing ventured nothing gained.

Beautiful, RH!! Congratulations, that looks so wonderful. So it's not on a trellis at all, just growing across the ground? How long have you had it? I've heard that most clematis take a few years to get going!

Westmoreland, TN(Zone 7a)

Thank You!
this one is 3 yrs old the lady that lived here before me planted it,... i had it on a trellis last year and it did wonderful, but wanted to see if i could do something different this year.
It's growing up and over a small chair i had for an old vanity.
so i thought it would do the trick of keeping the first growth off the ground till it could spill over the top of the chair and cascade to the ground and fan out across the rocks.
so far so good it is doing just what i wanted it to do.
it's fuller than it was at this same time last year so the third year is a charm so far.

Interesting. I'm not familiar with that trick...do you happen to have a pic where you can see the chair?

Westmoreland, TN(Zone 7a)

Wow, neat! Thanks for the pics.
It's amazing how full it is. Is this the kind that you have to cut back to 1 ft each year, or do you let it keep growing?

Ellicott City, MD(Zone 7a)

Such pretty flowers and it appears to be a vigorous grower too.

Willis, TX(Zone 8b)

Very pretty!!..Isn't that clematis "Comtess de Bouchard"?...Jeanne

Westmoreland, TN(Zone 7a)

Thanks Wifeygirl,... I cut it back each year.
So i guess that's the trick but this is only my second year with clematis so I'm still learning.
I have a few kinds and this is the oldest the rest are small and not at all full.

Shirley1md, Thank You and yes it seems to be.
