poster stick'ems stuck!

When our son was in HS he papered the plaster walls in his bedroom with sports posters using stickems to hold them up. Do you know what I am talking about? They come in assorted sizes and hold assorted weights of items. Well, he is 28 and married so I am cleaning out and painting the room. When I attempt to peel those things off they take some of the plaster. What do you suggest for a remedy? Kerosene, gas? Maybe I will end up re-plastering all the 36 holes.
