What's wrong with my Niobe?

Cincinnati, OH(Zone 6a)

This has been in place for about 3 years, and this is the first year it has spread and branched a bit. Last year it formed one flower bud which never opened. This year so far it has not formed any flower buds, and the leaves are starting to become discolored.

I fed it about two weeks ago with Bayer Two in One. (fertilizer and insect control).

Any ideas?

Thanks in advance.

Brown crispy edges can be a sign of fertilizer burn or not watering enough..I DEFINITELY WOULD NOT being using Bayer 2 and 1 on my clematis...you should use either Rose Fertilizer or Tomato Fertilizer...Jeanne

Thanks. I'll make sure it gets enough water and use something else next time. I didn't realize that the Bayer product was not good for clematis. Such a learning process. :)

Bayer 2 n 1 is a rose fertilizer. I use it on mine with no problems, but I use half the amount it says to and water it very well. I've also used the All in One with no problems.

If you want, you can snip the brown leaves off. That would encourage new leaves to grow.

I just remembered that I had spilled the container in the grass nearby (maybe about 2-3 feet) from the clematis. I scooped up as much of the granules I could and then soaked the spot in the grass. There is a burn mark in the grass there, so it may have received a bigger dose than I actually intended to give it. I tend to be on the stingy side when using slow release fertilizers, because I think the package directions are too aggressive. Spilling is definitely not a good way to apply it. D'oh!

Thanks. I'll try cutting off the burned leaves and we'll see what happens.

That is why I suggested not using the Bayer with pesticide in it...Personally I think it's too hard on the clematis..I only use bonemeal and Rose or Tomato Fertilizer...but then again I don't have mildew or bug problems on my clematis....Jeanne

Jeanne, the only bug(or something) that I've had on my Clematis is something that eats tiny little holes in the buds before they open. Any idea what that is?

You are probably having white fly problems and that can be solved by just putting cheap lemon scented soap in your hose-end sprayer and spray your leaves early in the morning..a few days of that and they be gone!!

Hi everyone. I have Niobe growing in a NE spot on the front of my house. For 3 to 4 yrs. at first no blooms. Just leaves. Then husband whacked it back one spring thinking it was a weed. That year it bloomed. Like crazy. I have never fertilized it and ever since, it has more & more blooms. (as I write). Where did you plant it winging? If it is white fly, Jeanne TX is right. Dish soap gets rid of lots of pests & doesn't harm the plant. Good luck. Niobe is a beautiful Clematis.

That's what happens as mentioned in the first posters response when the soil becomes too dry for too long.

Injury from pesticides would give you a crinkly-curly leaf.

Your vine does need food though as evident in the other leaves.

Jeanne, got me some lemon dish soap to spray. How much would I use in a 1 gal sprayer?
Thanks for the tip. I Think I'll spray my azaleas with it too.

Do you have a hose-end sprayer??..You know the kind that Miracle grow came in?(Those I just fillup with dishsoap)..If not put a half cup in your one-gallon sprayer..and let it rip..your plants are gonna love you for that...Jeanne
