Many gardeners who propagate Clematis, usually do so in the Spring, which is the most successful time. In my opinion, serpentine layering works well with Clematis.

Here are a couple of links to tell you about serpentine layering. I think it's best to do the serpentine layering in several 1 gallon containers, instead of in the ground. Either way it will work.
