Organic Spray for Slugs

Harper, TX(Zone 8a)

Does anyone have a good Organic spray for slugs. Do not want to use salt. I have buried Tuna cans in the ground with a yeast water mixture and it works well for lots of critters, but alas no slugs. Thanks for any advise. Txsdar

txdar, you can repell slugs with wormwood tea (or so it's been written!) I've never tried it myself. I also understand the hellebore will also deter them.

Oak leaves, used as a mulch will definitely deter them, and yes, I've used that. However, I very seldom have to deal with slugs so I wonder if I had a serious infestation of them how well it would work. If I were you though I'd certainly give it a try.

Although neem oil will kill certain bugs/pests I've also seen that it tends to have some repellent properties as well...perhaps that is another thing you could try?

One last thing that comes to mind is to set up areas for them to hide in, specifically boards, upturned flower pots, etc. They'll retreat to those areas in the daylight and you can easily snatch them up and dispose of them.

Hope this is helpful!

I've read and heard reports of great success using shallow containers of beer. It seems the slugs cannot resist beer and they drown in it.

I use straight household ammonia to spray on them and it is a quick death. Others dilute the ammonia. This practice does require that you walk around well after dark with a flashlight(I like those that are like miners lights that have a strap to go around your head and the light is in the middle of your forehead)and spray bottle.

txsdar, try this:

I have only one little hosta. Sprinkling eggshells around them when they're emerging in the spring does the trick.

Oops, this hyperlink doesn't work.

I just ran a DG search for slug control and got to some good threads.

Good luck!

Thanks everyone, I will try egg shells and beer traps and see what else I can trap. I have been picking them off the plants, icky. Also in one of my home remedy books, they suggest spray 1/2 water 1/2 vinegar around bottom of plants in a ring. So will try all three. I really want tomatillos. First time for growing them. Thanks all. Txsdar

I use Sluggo - an iron based product. Works well for me.
