so I guess they're not going to bloom this year

East Texas, United States(Zone 8a)

My irises are tall but I see no blooms or buds. THey were planted last fall. Since I am beginning to read that for a lot of you, iris season is over, should I assume that they will not bloom for me this year? thanks for your help

Vancouver, WA(Zone 7a)

Yes, I would assume that most of them aren't going to bloom this year. As an exception, you may have a few re-blooming varieties put up a stalk in the late summer/early fall. Sorry. :0(

On a brighter note, since they saved up a bunch of energy NOT blooming this year, they will probably be glorious next year!!

Since my earliest TBs have already started to bloom here in zone 3b, I would assume that TB season is probably finished down there in 9a. It is quite common for irises to take a year or more to settle in before resuming their bloom cycle, so don't despair. You will more than likely see plenty of beautiful blooms next spring.

Just FYI, I have written a FAQ discussing causes of non-bloom in bearded irises. You can find it here:

I am in zone 8 and still have a few left to bloom, however, they do have buds so I would say you are probably done. I planted around 50 new iris this year and only 13 bloomed this year. I expect next year will be spectacular! Depending on where you bought them, it may take a year or so for them to get acclimated. We are so hot here in TX that if they were purchased from a colder climate, they may take most of their energy just growing and establishing in our heat. I expect those roots will grow strong this year and put on a good show next year.
