Toilet

Nauvoo, AL(Zone 7a)

YOU MIGHT be a REDNECK if you use your old toilet for a garden planter.

Could you imagine?

Santa Barbara County, CA(Zone 9a)

Actually, yes I can imagine because I did it! Not that I ever in a million years thought I would....

When DH and I married, I moved into his house, an old stone cottage he was renovating on about an acre of land out in the country. Several sets of previous owners had left a lot of their stuff scattered about the property, including an old toilet in the back yard. We planned to remove it, but had so many other projects to do first (like finishing the inside of the house!) that I decided that if I had to have a toilet in the yard, it might as well have flowers in it. I planted nasturtiums in it and it looked cheerfully tacky. (They loved it in the toilet, btw! They survived on rain water only and did great.) No neighbors could see the toilet, thank goodness, because it was hidden behind a rise. The neighborhood kids thought the planted-up toilet was great.

thats funny.

when i told my son--you might be a redneck if you use your old toilet for a planter---he got excited and started thinking of flowers that would look good in the toilet. His thought was Wave petunias in the toilet bowl and in the tank. I was in shock that he got into the toilet thought. He said the expression on my face was priceless. (he is 17 yrs old)

You may or may not have seen the thread in the Curb Appeal forum dealing with tacky garden ornaments. One chatter submitted a story about toilet ornaments that you may find interesting. Very Funny! HYPERLINK@www.cincypeddler.com

When I lived on St. George Island I had to replace the septic system...also got a new toilet. I put the old one on top of the new septic tank and planted prickly pear cactus in it. Tacky, perhaps, but pretty!

I have an old PORCELAIN toilet on the patio, filled with ferns. Quite stunning.

Tyrone, GA(Zone 7b)

would love to see a picture of that - hehehe

Hey terracotta, I vacationed in your neck of the woods, summer before last. I use to vacation in Korbel (just pass Blue Lake) every summer as a child. Went to Moonstone Beach, played in Madd river and was shocked to see a casino in Blue Lake. I use to hide in the ferns and eat wild strawberry and blackberries as a child. I think the Pacific Northwest is truly beautiful and you are very lucky to be able to live up there. Jerry

I had a pink one at one of the places I rented a few years back. It was planted with wave petunias.
We saw my neighbor`s twin sons using it(if you know what I mean). They were about 4 at the time....

My husband said if I ever use a toilet for a planter---to at least add a bath tub and sink.

SE Houston (Hobby), TX(Zone 9a)

OOOOOOOOOOOOOh Cricket!

That's a fabulous idea! The whole ensemble! Don't get me started!

I have an old iron coated tub but the drain was welded closed. It would take an act of congress to remove it. But seriously thinking about it.

SE Houston (Hobby), TX(Zone 9a)

Do you know how valuable that tub is!!! Is it a claw foot? Do NOT get rid of it!

I have ferns growing in my porcelain tidy bowl... Plant something that spills over the sides in your tub! For that "running over" effect

Tyrone, GA(Zone 7b)

please, please, I'm begging... for a picture

SE Houston (Hobby), TX(Zone 9a)

Ok. I'll take one this evening and post it tomorrow. It's so full you might not see the toilet. I'll get my DH to pull it away from the wall so I get a good representative shot for you.

I'm liking that "spillover" thought more and more for your tub!

I grew up in New Orleans with porcelain, claw feet tubs! We still have one that my mother had refinished in our home in N.O. It's a chocolate brown exterior, mocha brown interior with solid brass fixtures. To die for!

Nauvoo, AL(Zone 7a)

it's not claw foot tub but it is very deep.
what if i cannot get a hole in it. Could I just line the bottom with gravel then put soil over it?

SE Houston (Hobby), TX(Zone 9a)

Cricket,
Just in case you EVER decide to sell the tub in the future, I would try drilling through the welded drainhole first. Then, if this doesn't work, I'd go with your idea of the gravel and soil. The only problem is oxygenating your soil so it doesn't get yucky smelling.

Oh---my---goodness! The newbie is becoming scientific!

Tyrone, GA(Zone 7b)

This may work - florists do it all the time when they do plantings in fancy containers that do not have drain holes. Put the plants in their own separate containers - that have drains - and put these containers in the tub. Have something in the bottom of the tub that will raise the pots level with the top of the tub. Buy some spanish moss or something similar and place around, between and on top of the pots to hide the separate containers. Won't be able to see anything except the plants peeking out and the moss will act to retain water. Cuts down on the amount of soil you have to use and you can easily swap out containers for different looks as the seasons change.

Glitz,
Brilliant idea. She could even use the packing peanuts or bubble wrap or styrofoam to fill up the tub!

I can supply a robins egg blue bidet... For a few years, had a 2nd hand store. Got the bidet in (unused ~ that's culture in east Texas). No market for it so I stuck it out in front with petunias, purple heart setcreasea, pink geraniums, pansys. I changed it out regularly. In the heat of summers, I went with succulents. It received lots of comments. It was a "pot" no one would steal. Unfortunately, I never took any pictures. Oh well....

SE Houston (Hobby), TX(Zone 9a)

So Podster,
Go take some pics and post them! I JUST got my digital camera two weeks ago!

Deep East Texas, TX(Zone 8a)

The 2nd hand store is closed and the bidet has gotten neglected and lonesome. Wouldn't make much of a photo these days...

GLITZ,
This one's for you! The toilet is to the right in the pic
