Is this common? I've never noticed it before, but two different irises unfolded with 4 petals yesterday. I think they are IB's; Baby Blue Marine, and Calling Card.
Polytepal Irises?
Extra flower parts are not uncommon in bearded irises, particularly in the median classes. The SDBs Jewel Baby and Advance Design frequently produce extra petals here, and Hee Haw frequently lacks its full complement of 3+3.
