Dog Proof?

Where do I look to find out if a plant is poisonous to dogs?

Dublin, CA(Zone 9a)

I think I've seen some threads about this on the Pets forum

This site also gives some helpful information on known dangers. Type in the name of the plant and search.

Edited to add the home page where you can search by common name or latin name. http://www.ibiblio.org/pfaf/D_search.html

PlantFiles provides some warning indicators, but the warning isn't species-specific (i.e., we don't provide different warnings for plants that are potentially hazardous to humans vs. pets vs. livestock vs. fish or birds.)

The Advanced Search (available to subscribers) allows you to locate plants using this and other details as your search criteria.

If Plant Files says the plant is poisonous, then I would trust what it says, but if it doesn't say anything about toxicity, it could mean that the plant isn't poisonous, or it could mean that the person who entered it didn't know it was poisonous and nobody has come along yet to correct it. So if PF says nothing, then I would still check somewhere else just to make sure before I planted something.

Good point and clarification, ecrane. Anytime that section has "unknown- tell us", I'd double-check if I were concerned about toxicity issues.
