We have an old chicken coop and I was wondering if I can use it as a compost bin. I can close the doors so you can't see it and it gets pretty warm inside. It is a dirt floor and some air can get in but is is pretty much enclose if that matters.
I am just beginning so what is my first layer supposed to be.
Thanks for any advice.
Ronnie
Can I use this as a bin?
You'll need to drill many oxygen holes, and depending on the wood/treatment, it may rot pretty darn fast. Those overactive compost microbes are in every way like frat boys and will escape the compost to eat their enclosure. Exposure to soil is very good. An organisamal interstate highway.
Think of how you might turn it, too. Have a look at Steve's new compost turning diary. linked in the "doo doo" thread.

I would remove the plywood and replace it with chicken wire, 2X4 welded or other wire. The compost process will soar. If you want you could keep the doors but they will decompose with the compost.
Thanks Soferdig but if I remove the plywood I would basically be removing the coop. I am trying to use what I already have if I can.
