I got this wisteria from my mother's house. After planting, I noticed an old wound at it's base. Should I do anything about this or just leave it alone??
TIA for your advice and suggestions...
Wistera advice needed please :)
'Sure looks like a wisteria to me.
I'd let it settle in its new environment for a month or so and then cut it off below the wound. These things are tough as nails, but it should grow nicer for you without that wound, especially at the bottom like that.

Ouch! That's what I was afraid of. But it does seem so bad to have that wound at the base. Thanks for letting me know it will survive, though!!!!
Plant it so that the wound is above the soil. It could heal over very quickly.
it could like James said heal over. if not you can cut it back when it goes to die off. most of them come back from the roots. but i would leave it alone till i knew it had established its self before cutting or you might lose it all together.
yes they are tough as nails but only once esablished.
Thanks all. Whatever I do, I'm not going to do it until it's good and settled in. What scraping that spot further and trying to air layer it? Do you think it will make roots?
Always looking for a way to make more!
:))
I say leave it. These guys are pretty tough. It should heal over and by next year, you'll probably not even notice the scar - because you'll be fighting the plant for custody of your house! ;)
Carter~LOL...I always think I want this great huge vine...maybe it's a case of "be careful of what you ask for"!!
I think the final verdict is that I'm going to wait until fall, and then decide...
Thanks everyone!

Thanks Mark...but I'm going to be overrun with all the sweet autumn clematis you sent me~lol~
I plan on planting them in the fall in a nursery bed...
