Container for shade

Painesville, OH(Zone 5b)

I would like to do a "woodland" theme container. So far, I have only purchased a Spinulose Wood Fern. What type of soil should I plant it in? The guy at the nursery said straight peat moss. Is that correct? What about a combo of compost and peat? What plants would go well as a filler? Any trailing plants that would do well?

Straight sphagnum peat and compost are poor choices for container soils. A very good soil for your containers would be
5 parts pine bark
1 part sphagnum peat (never use reed/sedge peat or MI peat in container soils)
1 part perlite
garden lime
controlled release fertilizer
a micro-nutrient source (kelp meal, seaweed emulsion, Earthjuice, other)

Add dwarf varieties of hostas, astilbe, ginger, Impatiens, small leafed mounding or trailing Coleus.
