Container for shade

Painesville, OH(Zone 5b)

I would like to do a "woodland" theme container. So far, I have only purchased a Spinulose Wood Fern. What type of soil should I plant it in? The guy at the nursery said straight peat moss. Is that correct? What about a combo of compost and peat? What plants would go well as a filler? Any trailing plants that would do well?

Hi Zone5girl,
I think variegated Tiarellas are great, Carex would make great filler, Begonias & impatiens for continuous color..., Lamiums, Ivy, or Wandering Jew for a trailer. I found a Rush at Bremec's in Chesterland that I am going to use in a container, It looks like it put its finger in a electrical outlet.
I personally would not plant in straight peat moss. I would use promix for a container, but I'm not sure if you are using your container for the season or permanately? I have gotten into using some perennials in my containers and in the fall I plant them out in the garden.
What ideas did you have in mind?
Shady
