Should I Be Nervous???

Springboro, OH(Zone 6a)

Hi all :)

I planted my first Irises last year, 'White Swirl' and "Butter and Sugar", Siberian Irises. I planted them after their bloomtimes, so they haven't bloomed for me yet. The foliage is up on all of them... I'd say about 4-5". Is this normal for Sibs at this time of year (zone 6)? I noticed that other gardens have Irises up and blooming, but figured they were bearded or something other than Siberian. Mine are definitely not close to blooming yet. Can ya'll tell me if my guys are tardy??? Should I be concerned?

Thanks!

Sibs are always a lot slower to arise than any of the beardeds, and they don't start blooming until the very end of the bearded season. That said, Sibs also tend to resent transplantation and will frequently take a year or two to settle into a new location before resuming their bloom cycle. It's likely your Sibs won't bloom this first year in your garden, but it's also possible they will.

I got some from Wanda in 2004 and the leaves got really tall on them last year, but they did not flower at all. This year I am very happy to report that they have several buds on them and will open any day now! Don't worry if they don't bloom this year.......like Laurie said, they will probably bloom next year. I know it's dissapointing this year, but I'm sure they will be worth the wait. :o)

Hi, huga,

I am sure yours will be fine. I planted some new Siberians last fall and they are slow, too, but I noticed some are beginning to have buds and one (which is unnamed) is actually blooming today.

In a year or two I will have some to share with you.

Hope your girls are OK. Let's see some pics of your new garden when you have time...

BTW--missed you at the RU! It was a lovely day. Take care. t.

Sibs sometimes take a while toi adjust to a new home. If they're green, they'll bloom ssoner or later. Mine usually bloom with the peonies in late May.

Thanks, everyone :) I was thrilled to see a bud on one of the plants today!! But, that one looks like the only one so far. I had planned for them to bloom with some allium I planted, but either my allium was too early or the SIs were too tardy. The allium are almost finished up. Maybe next year :) Thanks for the reassurance on the sibs, though ;)
