Clematis montana rubens

I just got one of these and am pondering where to put it. Will it grow up a tree with rough bark, like an old oak?

Barbara you can place some netting around the tree so it can get started..you might enjoy reading this link...Jeanne

I used a wire to guide mine up to the point of the tree where it could grasp some small branches. My first blooms opened the other day!

It's said to have a vanilla-like fragrance, but the blooms are higher than my nose will reach, lol.
