First Clematis Bloom

Ellicott City, MD(Zone 7a)

Clematis macropetala (also called "Blue Bird") is an early Spring bloomer with small pendulous blue flowers. It only grows about 8-10ft tall, does well in partial shade and needs NO pruning. It's the first of my Clematis to bloom. Hopefully, a lot more Clematis following closely behind this one.

Thanks everyone! Sometimes the smaller Clematis flowers can be over looked in favor of the larger showy ones. I think the small ones add a lot of simple elegance to ones garden.

Loretta: I like the color and shape, which I find very charming. Gosh, I don't know exactly how many Clematis I have. Last count was somewhere around ???? Oops, better count again!

Gary: There's ALWAYS room for more Clematis vines, because basically "the sky's the limit"! Now, you need to concentrate on all the different divisions of Clematis too!

Thanks Susie & Donna-just saw yours as I was completing my post.

How absolutely perfect. It reminds me of the skirt on every little girl's fantasy party dress.

Melva: I honestly don't remember where I found this Clematis. I did search the Web for you and it is currently available through Joy Creek Gardens (Utah I think) or Digging Dog Nursery (in Calif.).

Thanks Irishbelle! That's a great description of the flower!
