How Do You Say Clematis, Anemone?

Summerville, SC(Zone 8a)

Whilst living in England, I was constantly being corrected about my American pronunciation of plants. So I'm curious do you say Clematis and where are you from?

1. Clemuhtis
2. Clematis

Anemone

1. Animoknee
2. Anamoney

X-
I'm from Tx, and always pronounced it clemuhtis, until I was continually corrected and told it was clemAtis.

Now I say ClemAtis.

Anemone is correctly pronounce(*here) uh NEM o nee
nem with a short e, not long e

This is fun. How about poeny? Pee a nee or Pee own nee?

Hulbert, OK(Zone 7a)

Oh, isn't this the truth?

When someone corrects my pronunciation, I
say "TomAto, TomOto." The one that gets me is
when someone states "You mean ClemAHtis."

Martha Stewart pronounces it Klem-AHH-tis, while
Rebecca's version is the one I use...whatever suits you.

Herb or erb, it doesn't matter to me, as long as we both
know what one another is referring to. LOL.

I say clem and nim
My grandma called peonies, pineys.

Deep South Coastal, TX(Zone 10a)

The first time I heard someone say "piney roses" I had no idea what they were talking about!

(Taylor) Plano, TX(Zone 8a)

I asked a guy at Lowes if they had their "PEE uh knees" in yet,...I guess I said it fast and he didn't hear me right, lol...

...he said..."we don't carry PANTIES! here"(we Texans prounouce panties as
"Pa uh knees")

That has happened to me now about three different times!...now I say it VERY slowly, lol.

LOL, only in Texas.

Silsbee, TX(Zone 9a)

ROTFL!! My sis lives in TX so I can relate to that story. Her accent isn't so bad, but to talk to my neice and nephew on the phone...they really pour it on thick just to get me! "I'll tell you what!"

How about Brugmansia?
Broo-man-shee-a
Brug-man-see-a
Brug-man-shee-a
Broo-man-see-a

I refrain from speaking that word, is there a correct pronunciation or is it just me? I'd love to hear that in Texasian!

Seedpicker,

I could not stop laughing over your post, and to top it off,
I had a mouth full of sandwich.

LOL

Heathr, whatever works is how one pronounces it, :-)
Or you could just ask for Angel's Trumpets - but the drawback is
you may end up with Datura instead of Brugmansia. :-(

Silsbee, TX(Zone 9a)

Usually I ask for a "Brug" out of habit and get a "Huh?" Then ask for an "Angel's Trumpet" and they take me to a plant. I say, "Dis is a Dat" and get a "Duh!" den I go home.

Thanks for the laugh, I truly needed that and have wondered the same thing about both words..
i lived in Texas 18 years and my kids still live out there so I truly miss the Texas draw..
Now here so many times I can not understand so many people and my hubby is one of them..but I love all the accents..

Your Welcome. Isn't it so much better when you know the latin? So when someone asks you what that plant is, you don't stand there going 'An..an..animonee....I think thats how its said'....... :D

Heres another link to the taunton site http://www.taunton.com/finegardening/pages/fg_feat_perren.asp . Theres some great articles there, one on how to hybridize your own daylilies and another on how to hybridize Iris. And here's the link to the daylily society for registration. http://www.daylilies.org/
