Hanging window boxes

What is the correct method to hang window boxes on the house? I have vinel siding and shingles (?) underneath that. I am afraid if we hang the windowboxes and they are too heavy (or not secured properly) then they will fall off and we will have these " holes" in the siding.
Any advice is appreciated Janice
