You're not going to hurt your irises by moving them at any time of year between the last frost of spring and 6 weeks before the first frost of fall. Of course if you move them before bloom, there's a good chance you'll lose bloom for that year, but you won't do any harm by moving them immediately after bloom. I do it every year. In my short season climate, I have no other choice.

The exception to this guideline is to try to avoid moving irises when temps are above 90 degrees (esp. if you live in a humid climate). That can unduly stress the plants.

Thanks Laurie... I have two books..both are supposedly for S.C. and both say dont move immediently after bloom...

I have a few clumps that I did not plant properly...too low.. They have survived in spite of me so I want to re set them in a better site.

thanks

If you dig them and immediately replant them, I can't imagine they'll even experience much, or any, transplant shock. Just cut the leaves back enough so they don't flop over and dislodge the clump when you reset them.

I agree with Laurie, Charlotte. Another thing I try to do is only move them in the morning or in the cool of the evening so that aids in further reduction of transplant stress.

Thanks Laurie and Roni..that means I can move a few of these clumps as soon as the final blooms fade.
