Rhubarb Has Gone To Seed

Winchester, VA(Zone 6b)

All of two year old Rhubarb plants have hughe seed stalks that have opened. Now there doesn't seem to be any stalks to be harvested. Was I supposed to remove the seed stalks long ago?

You still have time, twist them off and stalks will continue to grow until the weather gets hot.

As soon as you see a blossom/seed stalk forming, remove it at ground level. Some plants seem to be determined to bloom no matter what you do. I have one or 2 of them. We have fertilized, removed bloom stalks, divided and moved them, all to no avail. However if we keep the bloom stalks removed they produce plenty of nice eating stalks.

Do the seed heads seem to be early this year? Ours were starting earlier this week.

Dad told me, when harvesting, to cut off the leaf before pulling the stalk. Anyone else heard this, or is it an old wives tale?
