I posted this a fews days ago with no response perhaps because of my attempt at a witty subject line that was too obscure. So in an attempt to learn from my friends in gardening I will try again.
Anybody with experience growing apples in eastern MA? Thinking about a dwarf or semi-dwarf tree (or trees) for the backyard. Do I need two for pollination? And what about trees grafted with multiple varieties? Sources for trees in the area? I read that April is a good time to plant trees so timely replies are appreciated.

I have one Apple tree, planted about 18 years ago.
A semi-dwarf MacFree, close relative of MacIntosh. Love it.
Are you ready for a strict spraying schedule?
Willing to wait a few years for the first fruit?
They need full sun.

Thanks for both bits of advice. I'll try over there. I don't mind waiting (I started my asparagus just last year) but I'm less sure about spraying. I'll repost at fruits and nuts and see what else I can learn.

spraying is not hard! You just screw it on to the end of your hose and wet down every surface of the tree...or try to. Don't be discouraged by spraying, but you must spray and fruit tree spray or else the scale will get your apples.
