Schizanthus

Summerville, SC(Zone 8a)

Every Spring I empty out my main seed tin which always has lost seeds on the bottom and plant them. It's always a nice surprise when they start blooming. This year there were only 2 mystery seeds and they looked poppy seeds. When they started flowering my jaw dropped on the greenhouse floor. I don't ever recall buying these seeds or getting them in trade.

Anyway, they are Schizanthus .. utterly beautiful flowers.

Oooooh! I'm excited. I bought a packet of them from Value Seeds and winter sowed them...I hope I get something as pretty as yours!

This is one of my favourite plants. I've been growing it almost every year since 1978 when I first saw it in spectacular hanging baskets at Butchart Gardens in Victoria, BC.

This is a scanned Polaroid from 'way back but you can get an idea of the profuse bloom. Very easy to grow. I've never seen them in a nursery, so I grow them from seed every year. I have about 3 dozen growing on right now under lights in the basement.
