We tried this out first with the tomato folks, and they gave us good feedback, so I thought we'd try it in some other forums, starting here.
Here's a link to the sticky thread, in case you missed it: http://davesgarden.com/forums/t/590970/
Same questions I asked the tomato forum....
1) Is it helpful (i.e., did you learn about a resource you didn't know existed, or how to better use one of the resources it described?)
2) How could it be more helpful?
3) Would you prefer to see this type of thread remain as a "sticky" thread, or linked to a separate page within the description at the top of the forum? (Were you aware of the text at the top of this or other forums? It's a fair question - don't be afraid to say you never read them ;o)
4) Other feedback for us?
New sticky thread - comments, please!
very nice thank you
Thanks, I found some new info there. I sometimes :-) read the text at the top. I think it should remain a sticky.
Sandy
Hi Terry,
I think it is very helpful for newbies as well as for those of us who have been here awhile.
I'd really like to see it remain as a sticky. And even though I was aware and have read and even used the text at the top of this forum (and other forums), I think keeping both will help meet the needs of many users, including myself.
How could it be more helpful? As we get ideas - - can we just let you know on this specific thread?

I'd really like to see it remain as a sticky.
It will remain a sticky as long as the forum members think it's useful and helpful - it can be updated and modified along with any changes to the site over time.
How could it be more helpful? As we get ideas - - can we just let you know on this specific thread?
Yes ma'am - you sure can!
Tazzy's 'Iris 101' Thread would be nice to have in your Iris Links file.

Full of great information.
Terry
I find this very helpful, so please keep the sticky.

I am looking for a Iris nursery that is in Iowa. Think it is in Red Oak. does anyone know the name and a link Thanks
Here are the Iris vendors in Iowa: http://davesgarden.com/gwd/advanced.php?state=ia&country=XX&category=15&search_text=&sorter=company_name&submit=Search
And here are the vendors nearest Red Oak, IA (zip 51566): http://davesgarden.com/gwd/zip.php?zipcode=51566
I like the sticky, but I wish it had more links to keep me from asking so many "asked and answered" newbie questions!
I noticed these links posted recently in response to a question on starting iris from seed... http://davesgarden.com/forums/p.php?pid=3263307
If somebody could dig up a good thread on Iris borers (identification/treatment/prevention), that would probably be an excellent topic to link to the sticky also...
:-)
How did I miss this before. I was hunting and hunting for Tazzy's judging school and here it is, right under my noodle.

Can you point me to a thread that teaches one how to prep after the blooms fade? I don't have an iris book, yet. I'm not sure if I am suppose to just cut the stalk off at the base or leave it alone.
Oh, we're we suppose to read the stickies ?
Def. keep the sticky. We could all put our favourite urls on there, re borers, cold climes, rot, etc etc Bet we could go on and on with many other subjects.
inanda
Guess I'd better start reading those stickes..might learn something !
I am new to computers. Please define 'stickey'.
A sticky thread is one that always stays on top of the forum. Look at this forum, and notice that the first thread says sticky behind it. http://davesgarden.com/community/forums/f/iris/all/
For the other threads in the forum, whenever someone posts to one, it moves to the first thread below the sticky threads. In other words, the sticky threads always stay in the first places in the forums list of threads. The other threads are in order of newest ones that someone has posted to.
Does that make sense?
Yes, thanks for dfinition--I have seen it at the top and now know why.
Very good, lots of good reference material. Keep the sticky.
I also vote for the sticky.
Please leave the "sticky". I have been a member for some time now but my flower interests change from time to time, and I always go to the forum and read the "sticky". This is such a neat site for newcomers and also for those who have been members for a long time. Thank you for all you do to help us. Elaine
For newbies: how to store iris bulbs
there was a link sometime back on potting up iris ...it helps the folks in the hot south when iris orders come in the hottest part of our summers....potting them up to be planted later in the fall.. I believe the link was from the Canadian iris society
Thank goodness someone explained what a sticky thread was. Yes, keep it please.
This thread is a great help to anyone like me that has just started to get serious about Iris growing. thank you .Jean
JackieShar... I have the article on potting, written by Walter Moores, on my site too. Here's a link, if you need it (look at the page called "How to Pot"

Terry... I found the sticky extremely helpful, especially when I first came to the forum. It's intimidating as a newbie to see so many topics at once in the threads and not know where to begin. The sticky gives a really good starting point. Ev

Could you include the bleaching receipe to use when trading iris.
Since alot of this is about trading?
3) linked to a separate page within the description at the top of the forum
yes, maybe another page...I prefer the forums that aren't cluttered with stickies,(for example the sticky-cluttered texas forum). It is a bit distracting and cluttered looking, to have so many. You have to file down the page each time, just to get past the stickies, and find the new threads...
Maybe ONE, and that one can defer to other pages. But, please don't sticky this forum to death!, like some of the other forums. I like it nice and clean
Sorry, but I guess I've had some pretty strong feelings about this!, lol...
Looks like the Iris forum croaked. Too bad. I saw a lot if interesting questions, some of which I could actually answer. Will look elsewhere on Dave's to find more on Iris.
Would any sources need to be updated? I see no view that the iris forum 'croaked', it's all there even for computer novices. Perhaps we are all so busy talking to each other that there are no new posts on the sticky thread.
This is just the sticky thread. There's a whole bunch of other iris threads to look at. Irises is still alive and well.
I was just going by the last post being in 2009. Guess I followed the wrong thread. LOL. Will dig further. What else would a gardener do??
Here is a link on how to divide irises. It is all in photos and great for someone who have never done it. It was written by one of our members.
