It is either snails or slugs. They hide during the heat of the day and come out at night. Sometimes they hide in the mulch at the base of the plant, sometimes they hide under leaves on the plant. Sprinkle some diatomaceous earth around the plant or put out slug and snail bait. If you have cats or wild birds, you will want to hide the bait under a piece of broken pottery or something to keep them from eating it.
Another way to trap them is to take a small can or plastic tub, bury it in the dirt with the rim even with the soil line. Fill half way with stale beer(you can also make your own bait with sugar water and yeast). The slugs can't resist the beer/yeast, crawl in and drown.
