Dogwood Vine
Larkie can i ask the proper name of this vine?? i looked up dogwood vine but didnt find anything. it looks like something similiar to it my mom in laws yard. we have never found a name for hers.
I got this in a trade several years ago, this was the only name the girl knew.. I have never been able to pinpoint the exact name.. I started this from a tiny 6 inch cutting and it is all over a huge pine tree and arbor now.. The bloom is exactly like the dogwood tree, no scent. Wish I knew.
larkie
Could it possibly be a large-flowered clematis?
Nope, don't think so..Too thick stemmed.. It's a very shrubby vine..
Larkie
What about an English Dogwood (mock oragnge)? It looks similar to one that I have.

Looks like the English Dogwood, but this is more like a vine, but maybe so. Thanks..
Larkie
Mine also has the tendacy to vine. I still think they are pretty.
Angela
maybe a Cherokee Rose? the flower resembles the dogwood and mock orange.
No Cherokee, I have that all over the place.. It's our state flower and a gorgeous rose..I posted one earlier.. Thanks..
larkie
It's gorgeous Larkie! Would you consider sending me a start for postage?
thanks...
Marcy
Could I please get in line behind Marcy? That sure sounds like a keeper!

A DG member asked me if I knew anything about "Dogwood Clematis." In my online search to find any info about a plant with this common name I came across this thread. I also came across Clematis chrysocoma listed as being called "Dogwood Clematis." The C. chrysocoma var. seriacea seems to most closely resemble a Dogwood flower, to my eye.
There are no photos of C. Chrysocoma in the Plant Files. So, Larkie, maybe you can get the plant in your photo positively identified as Clematis chrysocoma and add it to the Plant Files page? and provide the common name for the plant as "Dogwood Clematis" so others won't have to go on a worldwide search as far and wide to find it as I did?!! LOL
Jeremy
Larkie, as Jeremy suggests, can you get clear pictures close in on the flowers and leaves? I think Clematis montana cultivars are sometimes called dogwood clematis, but chrysocoma is so called more often, it seems. The bright golden stamen leans, again, as Jeremy said, toward chrysocoma and similar plants:

Larkie is not alone in using that common name:

Beautiful! I can certainly see how it got the nickname "Dogwood" Clematis.
Jeremy: I think you're on the right track when you identified it as Clematis chrysocoma. However, after searching C.O.T.W. (Clematis On The Web), I'm wondering if it might be Clematis spooneri, (formerly C. chrysocoma var. sericea). http://www.clematis.hull.ac.uk/new-clemdetail.cfm?dbkey=296
Kenton: I see we cross-posted at the same time.
Shirley, as always, it is a pleasure to cross post with you!
C. spooneri

C. spooneri is available here:

Only somewhat off topic, I think I have to have this fellow:

I didn't know C. chrysosoma var. sericea had been renamed to C. spooneri. C. spooneri was one of my first thoughts for a match-up when I did a DG Advanced Search for white-flowering vines. If C. spooneri is now the new designation, I would say that C. spooneri is the correct I.D. for Larkie's plant. Perhaps someone can add the common name of "Dogwood Clematis" to the Plant Files page for C. spooneri?
BTW - ChristmasCactus, the other DG member that referred to this plant as "Dogwood Clematis" in the thread referenced above, was the one that spurred me to research the name for the plant.
As always, it has been an interesting adventure to track down the designation.

So I WAS right- LOL!
Congrats on getting this beautiful vine I.D.'d.
I'm still not sure of the real name.. The leaves on the ones shown here are not the same,, My leaves are not jagged or toothed..They are identical to the southern dogwood tree.
Larkie
Is there any way to present a picture of said leaves?
Thanks for your pictures, Jeanne. Awesome combinations, as always.
Jeremy, do you want to mail PF admin and have them add "Dogwood Clematis" to the name, or shall I?
It's pretty bare right now, but I will see if there is one or two on it.
Larkie
Ha, I wasn't paying attention to see the date of the first post, thanks Larkie.
JamesCo -- feel free to contact the DG Admins about adding "Dogwood Clematis." The suggested addendum will probably have more credibility coming from you as far more of a Clematis expert than I am with my limited experience with the vines. I am glad to have been able to assist in the I.D. of this plant.
But now I am really intrigued to know what Larkie's vine may be! I'll be watching for developments on the I.D.
Jeremy
Dear Jeremy, DG admin will take seriously the advice of anyone on DG, if anything, they are probably annoyed with me and the number of times I have mailed about little nit-picking things in PF! (I mailed about spooneri, and will probably mail about the synonym of chrysocoma sericea) You were the one who found the closest match to species, after all. I'm no Clematis expert, but thanks for the compliment.
Jeremy: We're not experts, but are definitely learning right along with everyone else. We just absolutely love Clematis! It's just one of my gardening obsessions.
Jeanne: You always have the loveliest Clematis combinations. You definitely have a special eye for choosing the best ones to pair together.
JamesCo - I, too, am probably on the nutcase list for the DG Admins for all the "errors" I note and want corrected. I haven't sent it in yet, but I noticed the Forum for the desert-loving plants is labeled "Cactus and Succulents" instead of the more correct "Cacti and Succulents." And you think you are a nit-picker?!! LOL
BTW - some of you may be aware of my arrangement with a local Lowe's store to take all their distressed unsold bargain plants in bulk "cull pack" purchases at $10 per 8' x 6' x 2' rack (usually about $1000 retail in plants for about $20 per week!) Last year, several of the cull pack purchases included about 40 clematis. Some are still remaining, but not looking too happy. I never found the few moments required to pot them up and give them some additional TLC. Most of them went to new homes for free for those DGers and other friends that take advantage of my "all-you-can-haul-free-for-all" plant giveaways. I would love to be able to offer them for postage or trades in the Clematis Forum (they come with the cultivar name tags and are the multiple varieties in 4 inch pots you would typically find at a Lowe's or other big box store). The only problem is that I stay so unbelievably busy that I can never seem to find the time to box and ship plants. I am already behind on current trades and plants-for-postage offers, so I don't feel right about offering anything else until I catch up. I've recently done a giveaway of plants with a proxy shipper which worked out well for all concerned, it seems. ChristmasCactus wanted some of my Agave americana and other plants. She found a friend of hers in Jacksonville that was willing to come by my place, pick up the plants from me, and ship them. If any of you have a friend in Jacksonville, Florida, or nearby that would be willing to do the shipping, I'll gladly make the clematis available -- both those that remain and are in reasonably good health and any future Clematis that I get in the cull pack deals. I'll leave it up to your resources to find the right person in my area that would be willing to do the shipping. Most of my DG friends in the area are already tied up with their own trades and offers, so you may need to look outside of DG for a proxy shipper.
Do I seem like a big tease to tell you that there may be dozens of named cultivar Clematis available from time to time, but then say I am unwilling to take on the task of shipping? If so, I apologize, but I don't want to make promises that I know I will have difficulty fulfilling. Hopefully, you can poll your collective friends and acquaintances (if any) in my area and find someone willing to be the proxy shipper. I have already tucked quite a few of the Clematis around in my yard (they will grow nicely here if given the correct situation), and provided Clematis to everyone that wanted them locally, so I can give away any others that remain or come my way in future cull packs. Someone can start a thread in the Clematis Forum or elsewhere if you want to start the search for a proxy shipper. I hope it works out. I hate to see the Clematis languishing in tiny pots when they could go along to appreciative gardeners and flourish!
Jeremy
