Cortaderia selloana (Pampas grass) as annual

Painesville, OH(Zone 5b)

I'm in zone 5, which is supposed to be too cold for Pampas grass. However, I decided to try my luck and bought some seed. How much will it grow in one season? We've been having pretty mild winters (for Ohio) the last few years, so I figured it's worth a shot. Tamara

Hi Tamara,
I have not grown pampas grass from seed, but I have grown in from a 4" pot of it - put in fairly late. It grew 3-4 feet that year. In my zone 5 it did not make it through the winter. There are some nice similar miscanthus that would to consider.

Hey Tam,
How did it do? I just bought some more last week and planted it.

Umm...well....it didn't. ;-) I did try and grow it but I forgot to water the seeds and they died. Probably better anyhow, since I have 3 little ones and it's not supposed to be kid-friendly. Tamara

It's sharp alright. My neighbor where I was planting it was swearing that her mom has pampas at her house in 4b. Most likely Ravenna miscanthus.
