I am about to turn under my veggie garden and it needs sweetening. I have read that you should never put down lime and fertilizer at the same time.
Any thoughts would be appreciated

Lime needs to be mixed with the soil to work uniformly. Also fall application is best as it works slowly...over about 4 years. Powder will work faster than pellets and dolimite has magnesium also which can be very good.

I don't know about a fertilizer problem.

many thanks for your response!! Should I wait until fall or can I spread now??

you can incorporate ground limestone at any time. As Indy said it takes time to be optimally effective. Dolomite is even slower to raise pH, but does add magnesium. I t is always a good idea to have a soil test to determine the exact need before amending. You can get hydrated or slaked lime at many garden centers. This is very fast acting in an emergency but somewhat hazardous to the applicator. There is no incompatibilty that I know of between lime and fertilizer. some of the multi-nutrient formulations contain lime stone.
