what are they? I have a ton this year all over my yard. More this year than in other years. Friend or foe? thanks for your help

Most likely you're talking about Crane Flies.
They do not bite, the larva and adults of most species feed on decaying plant material and they are an important food source for birds so see them as Friends :)

Up here they are foes if you have grass. The larvae damage the roots of lawn grasses. If you have crane flies, you end up with huge brown patches in the lawn.

hmmm. I have St Augustine grass and brown patch is something I usually fight by summer's end, except summer 2005, when our summer heat was desert-like, most unusual and grass was soaking the water just as quickly as it feel on the grass, no time for fungus to form.

You might want to check the roots in that area of the lawn. I don't know if you have the same crane flies that we have, but sure sounds like it.
