I have my local bought tators... ... ... what do I do now to get them ready for the garden? I have grown potatoes from the little guys but these are biguns... do I just cut up and plant or..... ??? I know I am early but I just want to be ready when the time comes.
Alright sweet potatoes . .
Mitch, There are two ways to develop slips for planting on sweetpotatoes. Up north here I put whole sw.potatoes in glass jars filled ¾ with water about March 10 for May 10 planting outdoors in a ridge. Then I cut the 6 inch sprouts off and put in water for 10 days before planting to root before planting in the garden.
In warmer areas you plant the whole tator on a 45º angle with the sprouts upward in sandy soil and cover them up to the top tip.....keep moist. They will root nicely and you break the sprouts off with the roots to plant them in a ridge in the garden.
Hope this helps.
Some store bought potatoes may be treated to slow down sprouting.
Thanks Just what I needed to know!
We always put them in water to sprout and use the sprouts to plant. Have always had good luck with them. Try it, it makes a pretty vine in the house too.
