Ohhhh....pretty! ☺

Ya know, there used to be a blue potato grown in Nova Scotia called a Bluenose, but I don't know whatever became of it. It predated the schooner Bluenose (pictured on the Cdn dime).

What are the names of your potatoes, Farmerdill?

These are All Red, Adirondack Blue and All Blue. I am not growing all of them this year, found the picture when searching for seed potatoes and found it intriguing. These are available from http://www.tuckertaters.com/p_descriptions.html

Good for you, that seems like a plenty early start. You'll have new potatoes before most of us even have sprouts. Good luck with them.

Rhonda, you may find this interesting: http://www.mail-archive.com/nsroots@ednet.ns.ca/msg00626.html The Bluenose is an ancient potato that is no longer listed in the Canadian Potato Variety Repository http://www1.gnb.ca/0029/00290064-e.asp or the European database http://194.128.220.6/web01/aweb/lnks/htu00002.htm

Lovely potatoes... that Adirondack Blue is something else.

Thanks, Farmerdill! Those links were really interesting.

I had heard that the "Bluenose" nickname (for Nova Scotians) had come from the potato. The story about the blue mittens was a new one to me, but I suppose it's just as plausible.

It would be nice to track down a source for them, but I think they may have gone the way of the dodo. : (

BTW: I have never considered it an insult to be called a Bluenose. It's my heritage and I'm proud of it! ☺

Hey Farmerdill, Tucker Farms is a couple of miles up the road from here and I'll be getting seed potatoes from them this year for a new variety, Adirondack Red. I've grown red-skinned potatoes before but never any that were red clean through. I think I'll try some Adirondack Blues also this year.

I'm also just a few miles from the The Uihlein Potato Research Station of Cornell University at Lake Placid so I may as well grow some varieties that were developed up here in our northern climate and sold by local farms. Last year, my seed potatoes were just regular white sack potatoes I bought for eating that started to sprout. They were raised at Tucker Farms. I bought them at the local market and I'm still eating the crop that grew from them.

Excuse me for interrupting; my comment isn't THAT relevant, but my DH works for jetBlue, where they have been serving blue potato chips as long as I can remember, which isn't very long since the airline is only 5-6 years old. LOL!
