question on raising acidity

Kellyville, OK(Zone 7a)

I have a friend that told me that he uses ashes from his fireplace to sprinkle around his lilacs and azalies to raise the acidity his he correct? thanks John

Wood ashes are alkaline and heavy in soluble salts. They raise pH, which lowers acidity.

Big time it raises ph. I cannot use ashes here in Montana (ph 6.9-7) or it will kill the plants I put it on. My yard likes it. Also I put 2 gallons in my compost pile before I spred it out in the next bed. Good potassium source.

Thank you, Al, maybe that is why he is always trying new things to get his azalies to grow. John

He better try something else! Leaves, pine needles, pine mulch would all be better. Even cottonseed meal.
