Clematis X cartmanii 'Joe'

St. John's, NL(Zone 5b)

It's that time of year....the first blooms are now opening on my Clematis X cartmanii 'Joe'. It will flower from now until early May. Highly recommended plant for those in mild climates. I grow mine in a cool greenhouse (8 C minimum). The flowers are relatively small, about 2" across and the clone is male, so no seeds are produced. Reproduction is by cuttings only.

Fascinating. What are the parents of x cartmanii? Do I see some C. cirrhosa blood?

Beautiful flower and I love the fact that it blooms for such a long time!

Lovely flowers! Wonderful, such flowers in winter.

I have read that it is a hybrid between Clematis marmoraria and Clematis paniculata.

Todd., just a question?? Do you let the clematis grow up or do you have him cascading? Last year at a nursery near here, I saw one in a huge clay pot, up high, flowing downward..oh so beautiful!! Elaine

Mine is on a shelf and cascading down...it doesn't really climb, at least mine doesn't. The stems are never longer than about 3 feet.

I think your idea is great....cascading down from a top shelf!! E
