Parks Garden Catalog came today, so had to look at it and I've come to the conclusion it's not just lily lust I have, but all plant lust. I wonder if there is a Gardeners Anonymous organization out there somewhere.
Anyway, on the back cover is a daylily called On And On and it says Big Pink Stella de Oro and "repeat blooms until frost". Does anyone have this daylily and is it as good as what Parks is saying? I planted Strawberry Candy from bare root last spring. The plant got a lot bigger than I expected for the first year, but only had three blooms. I was talking to someone at the Legion a few weeks ago and she was saying that all these rebloomers don't always live up to what we are led to believe. So I was wondering if amyone has had experience with this plant.
Here's the catalog pic.
Daylily On And On
Hi, I don't have an answer for you on the On And On Daylily. Funny thing is that I have been drooling over the Strawberry Candy from Van Bourgondien's catalog. :o) I am not really even a big daylily fan, I just like this one because of the contrasting colors. It and Rainbow Candy from the Park's catalog.
My guess would be that nothing is as good as the catalog says ;o) but I try to give all perennials a couple of years to get established before deciding how they are going to do. You never know you might like your Strawberry Candy much more this year. I bet you get many more blooms.
That On and On sure is pretty though, hope someone has it and can answer your question.
Cindy
Did you check the company in Garden Watchdog?

I must be doing something wrong because "stella" only comes out to play once a season for me even in the church garden which has a south facing slope and max sunlight. Even so I like the height and fullness of the 'rebloomers'. Ken

No experience here with the pink form, but plenty with the first introduced yellow. In full sun or part sun the plant quickly gets very large, a lot of foliage which tends to shroud the blooms, although the first round is plentiful. It does rebloom here, but too few blooms and very late, frost gets most of them. Frankly I pulled them out from a prominent place and replaced them with showier plants. In my opinion they are great for expressway median plantings but not home gardens.
Snapple & Kandlmidd- Interesting observations about the Stellas you had/have. Mine are good bloomers all summer long. I know some plants like poor soil conditions and when planted in too rich a soil, will put out a lot of foliage, but few blooms. Hum...
I planted the Strawberry Candy in a bed I had just dug last spring and I had amended the soil to make it richer. I think I'll avoid fertilizer in that area this spring and see what happens.
I was wandering through various forums and found this one. I normally hang out on the daylily forum and the pets forum, but since I live in Minnesota, I believe that means I'm in the upper Midwest. LOL!
'Strawberry Candy' is every bit as good as you've heard and then some. Once it settles in and has matured some, it will sends up scape after scape loaded with blooms. After the first flush of blooms, it will send up more scapes (though not as many) and bloom some more. As for the "Pink Stella De Oro', I do not believe that is it's real cultivar name and couldn't begin to guess as to what it actually is.
Rebloom on daylilies is a rather 'relative' term in our neck of the woods due to the short growing season. What may very well rebloom all summer in zone 6, won't necessarily do the same in zone 4. In any event, for daylilies, I recommend that you buy from reputable daylily breeders/nurseries who specialize in what they sell. You will usually get much more for your money. Here is one seller that I recommend with great confidence: http://www.bettysdaylilies.com/home.htm
There are many others, but Betty lives in Wisconsin in zone 4. And, no, I don't know her personally, just have been very happy with purchases I've made from her.
beaker_ch, you have made a good point about fertilizer. I still have a D'Oro growing out of the side of the compost bin. I think I will give it try in a difficult area along a fence where the soil is really poor and see what happens. I, know I should turn that compost!
sybiltwo, that's some link! I am ordering. Thanks!
Oh,,,,,I have lusted over Betty's Daylilies for quite some time,,,LOL I would Love to get down there and see her place,,,,maybe this summer???? Have never ordered but she has a good reputation and good prices.
Oh great! Another site to spend more money on. I just placed 3 orders today elsewhere and told myself NO MORE!
I guess I'll just take a quick peek. Thanks for the info, Sybil.
Snapple - If that Stella is in your compost bin and still alive, that's one hardy little plant and probably deserves another chance. Let me know if it does better in a change of soil. Maybe that's why they do so great along the freeways!
Kelly - you could come stay with me and we could visit Julie after shopping at Betty's!
Jody
That would be fun!!!!! I'll have to see what the budget says,,,right now it says,,,not anythime soon,,,lol It'll probably keep saying that too,,,grrrr

Sybil, what did you do that for? You just had to go and introduce me to Betty, didn't you??
She is waaaay to close to me, I might just have to visit her. Think she would trade daylilies for kids?

Hi ZenPotter! I'm up in the Heights. What do you have planned for your garden this year?
beaker_ch, Well I had promised no new beds this year, but after I took DH to a seed trade we will be adding a bed or two. So far we have sown 58 new(to us) kinds of perenials mostly natives. We are going to the Wild Ones Native Plant Expo this Saturaday to get some ideas. I have one area I want to rework, start work on a steep hill that we want to put all ground cover on. See thread from curb appeal. Plus if I haven't worn both DH and myself out add a second rain garden.
