Dwarf lily for window boxes?

Cincinnati (Anderson, OH(Zone 6a)

Hi everyone--

I have been lurking and lusting over all the lily pics on this forum. So beautiful! You are lasso-ing me in on lilies!

So, I am wondering if it is possible to grow dwarf lilies in window boxes, and if so, what kinds are recommended? And if I plant the bulbs now, will they bloom in summer?

If you know of a 'dwarf lily' specialist supplier, I could use that information, too. Or good 'dwarf lily' sales I should act on now.

Thank you very much. t.

Your best choice would be to purchase low growing asiatic lilies (such as pixie lilies).. you can check johnscheepers.com for example. Plant them in early spring and they will bloom in summer. Lily bulbs in window boxes will probably not survive a winter in zone5, so you may have to buy new bulbs annually (e.g. treat the lillies as annuals).

There's also some dwarf orientals. Miss Rio, Miss Burma and Roldofa. Can't remember where I saw them. Maybe Dutch Bulbs???

I have a friend who goes nuts at the local fall bulb sales and always buys more than he knows what to do with. Anyway, every year he pots up those bulbs and buries them, pot and all, in the ground. Come spring, he digs up the pots and transplants the bulbs to a permanent location. If your windowbox has a liner, I don't see why you couldn't do the same.

Windmill farms has Petite Pink, 12" tall. I found it with Google.

Thanks. I googled Pixie lilies and found a few http://images.google.com/images?hl=en&q=pixie%20lilies&btnG=Google+Search&sa=N&tab=wi

and some very pretty dwarfs, too.

I suppose I could 'plunge' pots of lilies into the window boxes and then when they are finished blooming take them out and 'plunge' them into the holding bed for the rest of the year.

Thankyou for the good ideas. t.

That's a good idea tabasco. Since the lilies will be finished for the season you can replace them with something else, and they can have a permanant home in the garden afterword. There are also some dwarf Orientals that would give some nice fragrance wafting in your windows.
