cedar shavings as mulch or amendment?

mid central, FL(Zone 9a)

this subject has probably been covered before, but please refresh me. i have several bags left over from stuffing dog beds and rather than return them, can i incorporate them into the sand/soil i have here? i wasn't sure about it, being cedar. thanks! debi

You can but you might want to add a little extra nitrogen if you incorpate with soil due to loss caused by decomposing. I use a hardwood mulch that has screened cedar with other hardwoods. I spread about 1" thick on top. Works great.

thanks larry. i have used small amounts before but that didn't make it right. needed another opinion. i just got a load of fill, which translates in this part of the country to a sand/clay mix. i have to add tons of stuff to it and didn't want to waste the shavings.
