Cherry laurel disease

Atmore, AL(Zone 8b)

Nearly all of my cherry laurel have a rotten spot on the trunks and something coming out of it that looks like brown jelly. Is it some sort of canker?

It kinda looks like honey fungus http://www.crocus.co.uk/pestscards/honeyfungus/?
Prununs in my area ooze sap in a black tar-like goo.

Yeah, I think so too. Although it may seem cruel, the tree should be cut now. This fungus can spread to adjacent plants.

I have found 3 cherry laurels with this spot on them. I havn't seen it on anything else.

Did it start with mower-bumping damage? Looks like about the right position on the trunk. If that's the case, it might be some other secondary decay fungus. Regardless, the tree seems small and the infected wound seems large, and growing -- not a good thing.

Gummosis?

I'd agree with gummosis. It is very common on Prunus laurocerasus, and doesn't seem to cause it any serious harm

I looked it up and think that is what it is also. I will probably cut this one down and burn it since I have plenty of young seedlings.
