Garden Quote of the day

Selma, NC(Zone 7b)

I thought we might continue this thread since I've enjoyed it alot.

"If you have a garden an a library, you have everything you need." ~ Marcus Tullius Cicero(106-43 B.C.)

I've bought several new gardening books that were recommended on past Carolina GW threads and am looking forward to devouring them soon.

Every blade of grass, each leaf, each separate floret and petal, is an inscription speaking of hope...
So that my hope becomes as broad as the horizon afar, reiterated by every leaf, sung on every bough, reflected in the gleam of every flower.
~Richard Jefferies

I am strongly of the opinion that a quantity of plants, however
good the plants may be themselves and however ample their
number, does not make a garden; it only makes a collection.

Well I'm sure there are plenty of folks out there who would call what I have a collection. I'm still trying very hard to make it a garden. Is she referring to mass plantings of one type of plant or just design in general?

i wish i could talk to ol' gertrude for a few days ... or months.
she may have been alluding to some gardener's lack of design
& effect considerations .. or perhaps it's a reference to a segment
of gardeners who believe "those with the most plants, wins" ... they collect all the desireables without much appreciation for them.
