Plant File search

Brockton, MA(Zone 6a)

I've tried to find info about my Apple tree and can't locate it. It is a "MacFree" apple I got from Miller Nurseries 15 years ago and it is great. If there is no previous entry for a plant, how do I initiate one? I've entered a few comments on existing files.

Andy,

Go to PlantFiles and then click in the brown bar at the top where it says "add a plant." Then you just fill in the spaces provided. After you have submitted it you can go to the entry and add more info and pics. Hope this helps.

I'm unable to find any mention of such an apple anywhere, would you be so kind as to give us some more information, such as any other names that came with it please?

Baa, I found several mentions of it (online, at least): http://www.google.com/search?hl=en&lr=&client=firefox-a&rls=org.mozilla%3Aen-US%3Aofficial&q=macfree+apple&btnG=Search

I also found references to 'Freedom', 'Jonafree' and 'Redfree' varieties, which makes me think there is/was a (perhaps small) series, bred for disease resistance.

Looks like Miller's may have introduced 'Macfree' a few years ago: http://www.millernurseries.com/cart.php?m=product_detail&p=278

At any rate, it looks like it is a valid name. To add a new plant entry, here are the steps: http://davesgarden.com/faq/pf/#17

Andy, Thanks for jogging my memory. I would love to read accounts from folks who have actually grown these "sprayless" type apples.

Baa, This ia a well documented cultivar. This type was highly promoted to organic growers in the 80's. Others included Jonafree, Liberty, Redfree, Freedom etc. Macfree is a late, medium size red apple, based on the McIntosh.

These cultivars are resistant to apple scab, but still succumb to other pests and diseases. Their popularity has waned to the point, that I have not found a current vendor for Macfree. Miller dropped it.

Thanks All. I started a file for this but did not know some of the specifics like genus etc, so I filled it in with the McIntosh info because that is the parent. If this is OK I will add a pic of the fruit and comments. All I really know is what was listed in the Miller catalog.
Farmerdill, you are always a well of good info, thanks for the links.
I also have a Blackberry Illini with the same problem, only info from the Miller catalog, how do I figure out that info?

Use Google to do a basic search: http://www.google.com/

Results from Blackberry Illini

Thanks I ran several searches including google.com this morning and came up empty handed, how strange!

Sarahskeeper if you are ever in any doubt about how to enter anything into the PlantFiles please don't hesitate to ask :)

I'm back.
I did a Google search but can't find enough technical info to complete the entry.
This time I'm trying to add a Crabapple called 'Bob White'.
I know the 'genus' is Malus.
And the Cultivar is 'Bob White'
What is the Family and Species?
I have a nice pic of the fruit and will have flower pics in Spring.

The family in my RHS book is Rosaceae, cant find the cultivar under any species, will look on web site

Lincoln, United Kingdom(Zone 8a)

Found an edu. link, seems no specific species for this one, the one above it has a species as well as cultivar name. Could be an unspecific hybrid

OK getting somewhere, same site different page. Mentions 'genus' Malus, and 'species' malus. There's your answer

Thank you, I had found the Ohio State site but not the other one.
Lets see if this works.
Much appreciated.

For many cultivars, there is no species, so the field is left blank. Hybrids generally are the result of crossing one or more species with another, and it's inappropriate to include the grex (i.e., the parentage) as the species for most plants - orchids being a notable exception to that rule ;o)

Brockton, MA(Zone 6a)

Farmerdill, I just got the new Miller Nurseries catalog and it is in there along with Freedom, Liberty and Jonafree.
I have a lot of Red Cedars in the area and have never had a problem with them.
I do get 'sooty mold' though, could that be because the nearby evergreens are crowding it?

Augusta, GA(Zone 8a)

Andy is this what you mean by Sooty Mold http://www.caf.wvu.edu/kearneysville/disease_descriptions/omsooty.html

Brockton, MA(Zone 6a)

Yes Sir. From that link I see that I have to be more aggressive with pruning to open up the tree for air circulation. I'm such a chicken with the pruners.
Thanks
