wiinter care for potted clematis

East Texas, United States(Zone 8a)

I intend to plant them inground next spring, but for now, should I put in the garage, or can they stay outdoors in the pots? thanks for your help. If it goes below freezing, do I need to cover?

Any potted Clematis gets buried for the winter. In the pot at it's normal depth and mulched a bit. Works for me. Remove mulch when Tulips come up.

Vossner, you're pretty warm, and clematis leaves, etc are frost-proof and should get a good dormancy. I'd go with Sarah'skeeper and mulch. It does not get cold enough to freeze a pot for you, does it?

For cold areas: A friend of mine keeps a great number of clematis in pots. (not terra-cotta) These are large enough that they do not freeze/thaw/freeze/thaw. They freeze just once. It seems that for potted plants, a person should let it freeze, them mulch well to keep it from warming up until spring. Small pots are harder to control; my method is the same as Sarah'skeeper: bury.
