Zinnia - what?

Carmel, NY(Zone 6b)

I got these seeds in a trade and they were labeled "Persian Carpet". However, they are not doubles - I think they must be something else. This is a very poor photo as we're have frost for the past 3 nights and snow flurries one morning.

Any ideas what else it might be? The color is actually a marigold orange with a darker center. Absolutely stunning!

Sequee,

I think it was saved from Persian Carpet zinnia. The petal shape and leaf form looks correct. The original award-winning mix contained a wide variety of bicolored blooms, mostly fully double, but as you know zinnias can revert to less than fully double and still look quite good. Here is Park's Seeds current listing for Persian Carpet: http://www.parkseed.com/webapp/wcs/stores/servlet/StoreCatalogDisplay?storeId=10101&catalogId=10101&langId=-1&mainPage=prod2working&ItemId=2188&PrevMainPage=advsearchresults&scChannel=Popular%20Search%20Main&SearchText=p16.v226;p13.Zinnia&OfferCode=RH1

That picture shows that Park's strain may have lost some of the original color combinations, including a remarkable deep purple with ivory tips. Yellow with white tips was another interesting variant. This next site shows a more complete color range for Persian Carpet: http://seeds.thompson-morgan.com/us/en/product/1774/1

It might be a good idea to grow the complete color mixture of Persian Carpets and then save seed from your favorite separate color combinations. You could save seed from over a dozen separate color combinations that way.

Oh, thank you! That is a good idea! I really the thought the one I had was lovely - just not as described! I did save some seeds, and it will be fun to see what comes of it!

Thanks again!
