I recently purchased a Dwarf Pyramidal Norway Spruce (Picea abies 'Sherwood Compact') and just planted it today. Given that it's been so recently moved, is it okay to prune it a bit (to keep the pyramidal shape) now or should I wait? Any advice about pruning an evergreen? I've not done much of that.
Thanks!
Andrew
When to prune Norway Spruce
Conifers generally should be pruned when the new growths are just about finished but before the wood has hardened (that would be July in my area but perhaps June in yours). That way, new buds will form at the pruning point for next years sprouts. My advice is NOT to prune them this time of year.
I agree with Todd, and further I probably would not prune at all except to remove an occasional wayward or dead branch. Let your little dwarf do its thing without artificial restraint -- it will look so much better than a sheared one.
