My wife wants me to grow a deep orange butternut squash next year. Suggestions for a good variety and vendor are appreciated. Having never grown these is there any chance of training them up a trellis like my cukes?
butternut squash suggestions
Butternuts come in several sizes and both bush and vining types. The vining types can be trained up a trellis just like cukes although they don't cling quite as well. They have orange flesh and a tan skin for the most part, Most vendors sell several cultivars. Probably the most grown vining type is the open pollinated Waltham. http://davesgarden.com/pf/go/1192/index.html
Burpee's Butterbush http://davesgarden.com/pf/go/89289/index.html has performed well for me. Small fruit, but the vine does not take any more room than a summer crookneck.
Hybrid vining http://davesgarden.com/pf/go/93693/index.html, Butternut Supreme www.twilleyseed.com is also very good as is Zenith. http://davesgarden.com/pf/go/92214/index.html Really Big, I have not grown, but it has been recommended by folks I respect. http://davesgarden.com/pf/go/93693/index.html
