Dividing Poet's Jasmine and Bringing Indoors for Winter

I got a Jasmine plant at the begining of the summer and I want to bring it inside. The problem is the root ball is so big I need a 20 gallon container for it. I don't have any place in my apartment for such a large container- is it possible to divide Jasmine or will that kill it?

This vine is supposed to be hardy down to zero degrees, but I would cover it with leaves and mulch. I plan to leave mine out this winter.
