dvd player maintenance

One of my dvd players has started freezing at some point on all discs. Ironically, the cheaper unit I have doesn't seem to have these problems. This more expensive machine is a few years old and probably not worth paying to fix. Is there a way to open it up and clean it? It's hard to believe that those kits they sell in the stores with the "cleaner discs" work. Any thoughts? I figure it's worth it to try to clean it myself before buying a new machine.
