is there such a thing? This is a newbie question as I know little about cannas. Bloom color not important. interested in it being short and purple/purpleish.

Canna 'Cleo' should do the trick for you.
It's the all dark form of 'Cleopatra'.
Also 'Autumn Dragon', 'Black Knight' and a host of others.
