Fast Evergreen

Vancouver, WA(Zone 8a)

A friends neighboring property has had deciduous/evergreen trees abundance for years but now they have been cleared for a new house and what would be a fast growing tree to give her a bit of privacy? Both deciduous and evergreen. We are pacific northwest so rain is plentiful.

Hi. A few suggestions. Thuja plicata 'Green Giant' (Cedar) can grow several feet per year and make a fast/tall hedge if you can find it. Prunus lusitanica (Portugese Laurel) is a favourite and always looks nice here. Cupressus macrocarpa (Monterey Cypress) I've gotten to like with the 'Goldcrest' cultivar - lemon-scented, bright yellow foliage and good growth. You might even try a few different Butterfly Bush for fast fill. Take a look at Chamaecyparis nootkatensis 'Pendula' - looks attractive from a distance and is "Westcoast". There are a few Eucalyptus that are hardy in our zone and put on good growth. I've read but not tried Magnolia grandiflora as a hedge but would imagine the evergreen lustrous leaves with fragrant flowers to make a great taller hedge if trained. You could also use Bamboo if barriers are installed. Check out Cistus Nursery in your area for unique hedging material. Hope this helps.
