re-blooming iris

Millbury, MA(Zone 5a)

Hi,
Can anyone tell me somewhere other than Breck's that sells re-blooming iris? My attempted search of the plant files came up empty. I've had good luck with the tall bearded iris and terrible luck with the little bulb type ones.

I expect all commercial iris growers sell rebloomers. Sutton's even has a rebloom reliability chart on their website that helps you choose cultivars that are the most likely to rebloom for you.

You can find a list of many commercial iris growers on the AIS website here:

Thanks for the link. I've bookmarked several growers, including one in my own state. I'm always getting catalogs in the mail, but never saw any specifically marked as re-bloomers except in Breck's and I don't know the varieties so couldn't tell just by the name whether or not they might be expected to bloom twice in a season.

Your best guide to finding rebloomers that might rebloom in your garden is to contact your nearest iris society and ask them which irises are known to rebloom for their members. Go here and click on the link for Region 1:

I'd call Cooley's and Schreiners. Dutch Gardens also has some but the first two have more proven varieties.

Thanks, everybody for the answers to my question on this thread and in e-mail messages. I should be all set now!

Can you report back to us on the ones you liked best? Please!

The place for you is Nicholl's garden. They are in a cool place too. Sutton's rebloomers very often perform poorly for northerners but Nicholls has tested them in pretty inclement weather. Her prices aren't always the best and the rhizomes will be smaller than you might expect because of her shorter season garden. However they will be fine.

Sutton's though has a very interesting list of rebloom reliability by zone. You should absolutely look at that. I haven't had really good luck with the big plant markets that sell Iris on the side such as Dutch Gardens. They are very often expensive and they tend to sell older cultivars.

Also Laurief has lists of iris on her website that would be helpful. She doesn't sell iris. But she hangs out here a lot and all of the iris on this page - except the new ones are very cold hardy. She doesn't baby her iris.

Also, it's late in the season. Some houses might not have what you want. But in March the iris growers begin to open their sites for orders.

Here's the best list of Iris growers we've been able to develop on DG and when they open in the spring.

Wow! You always impress me with your knowledge and your sharing!
Thank you so much.

Thanks again. I probably will wait 'til Spring to buy any (unless I see one available now that I just have to get). I promise that I'll keep a record this time of the name, etc. I currently have a white iris that's huge and looks almost iridescent in the sun, out in front of my store. Customers remark on them every year, but of course I can't remember just which white iris it is. I also have a black variety that is my personal favorite --- no idea what it's name is though.

Here's a picture of the black one. Both varieties are pretty top heavy and tend to fall over if not staked, so I had to pick this one before trying to get a picture of it.
