Earlier this spring, I bought one water hyacinth and one water lettuce plant. since then, they have been shooting out little babies. My question is whether or not I can cut the babies off, or will they divide by themselves and just detach from the mother plant?

I divide mine to spread them out over the pond. I think they will eventually break off, but I don't ever give them a chance:)
discodancer, I wait till the babies have a nice root system and then just pinch off the stem that attaches them to the mother plant.
